@ Salt is, of course, a substance needed to sustain human life. In Japan, however, it also has associations of a religious, conventional, and customary nature deriving from its use for cleansing and purifying space. Ms. Hirabayashi thinks that such an outlook is not limited to Japan, but has a significance and purpose that is common to all cultures. She consequently has created installations of salt, which may be regarded as three - dimensional drawings of letters.
