Ms. Kaoru Hirabayashi is an artist whose work deals mainly with the 51 souds of the Japanese syllabary, Her involvement with spoken and written words and syllables stemmed from some physical conditions and private experiences of a highly personal nature. Subsequent encounters with various histories and cultures made the mental framework of the self and others, and the consciousness of spirituality, into major components of her work. In Ms. Hirabayashi's belief, the 51 clements of the syllabary are not mere linguistic notations, but instead a mandala expressing the univers itself.
